An introduction to STIHL M-Tronic
Whether you’re just starting the working day or picking up your STIHL chainsaw after a break, with M-Tronic you can rely on a simple starting procedure and optimum performance regardless of whether the machine is warm or cold. The fully electronic engine management system automatically regulates the ignition timing and fuel metering, taking external factors into account as it does so – such as temperature, altitude and fuel quality. This means you can concentrate fully on your work, safe in the knowledge your STIHL power tool will be performing to the very best of its ability from the moment it starts.
A closer look at the STIHL M-Tronic system components
For a cold start, your STIHL M-Tronic only needs to use one position on the master control lever. You can immediately power up to full speed after starting. When the tool is switched off, the control lever moves itself straight back into the operating position meaning the tool can be restarted immediately.
The control unit is the hub of the STIHL M-Tronic system. It includes an integrated memory function that remembers the most recently used settings, ensuring you get maximum engine performance when you restart your engine under the same conditions. The control unit also measures changes in engine RPM, adjusting the fuel flow to suit.
The micro-switch in the STIHL M-Tronic system registers the position of the choke and, together with the electronic temperature recognition function, ensures that the engine starts up properly.
The electronic solenoid valve supplies the ideal amount of fuel to the engine – as calculated by the control unit – in a matter of milliseconds. With STIHL M-Tronic, there’s no need for manual carburettor adjustments.
The benefits of STIHL M-Tronic
Simple starting
There is only one cold start position with an M-Tronic machine, as opposed to the full choke and half choke positions of a traditional 2-stroke machine. The master control lever will spring back into the idle position, meaning once warm the machine is always ready to start.
Low maintenance
STIHL M-Tronic adjusts the amount of fuel in the carburettor for all operating states; including starting, idle, partial and full throttle. – This process occurs automatically and takes into account the relevant external factors. Other than an occassional re-calibration, the only other maintenance task that may be required is replacing the solenoid valve. This is a quick job for your nearest STIHL approved dealer.
Top engine performance at all times
Based on the engine temperature and speed, the STIHL M-Tronic control unit continuously checks the operating status of your chainsaw and regulates fuel supply accordingly, so you always get the best possible engine performance.
Outstanding acceleration
Thanks to the electronic regulation of ignition timing and fuel metering, STIHL M-Tronic machines accelerate much faster than standard carburetor / ignition module models, meaning you can get to full speed straight away - even after a cold start.
Memory function
STIHL M-Tronic stores the settings from the last time you used your tool – regardless of how much or little time has passed – and applies them when you start your chainsaw again. So when the external conditions are the same, full engine performance will be available immediately after starting.
Reset your STIHL M-Tronic machine
The chainsaw adjusts itself automatically for optimum performance during operation, however a reset enables the saw to be adjusted faster than what may occur automatically. If you feel your chainsaw isn't reaching it's maximum RPM or you notice a drop in performance, a reset could be an easy solution. We also recommend re-setting the saw if replacing a particularly well used component such as a fuel or air filter.
The exact procedure for a reset will depend on the age of the chainsaw and the version of M-Tronic it features. M-Tronic 3.0 is the latest version featured on the MS 462 C-EM, FS 411 C-EM and many others. If you're unsure about which version your machine has, consult the user manual or speak to your nearest STIHL approved dealer for advice. (The CE label inside the chain brake will also state which version of M-Tronic is featured - more information in the video below!)
To reset your M-Tronic 3.0 machine, firstly let it warm up briefly. Switch the machine off, then engage the chain brake and move the switch to the cold start setting (▴). Start the chainsaw and let it run for at least 30 seconds, and a maximum of 45 seconds without pressing the trigger. Release the chain brake and pull the throttle trigger all the wat in. While you hold the throttle trigger, the chainsaw will first rise to a speed range of around 10,000 rpm and then to a maximum speed range of around 14,000 rpm. As soon as the speed noticeably drops, the calibration is complete and you can remove your finger from the trigger. STIHL M-Tronic 3.0 has now optimally adjusted your chainsaw to the current altitude, temperature and fuel quality.
